More than just a Buffet

Not limited to the label of 'buffet' restaurant,
China Star also provides take-out and dine-in service. The restaurant incorporates authentic Chinese and Asian cuisines alongside ordinary yet popular Americanized Chinese dishes. The eatery has an advantageous location: close to highway 51 & 64, and right along offices buildings and shopping areas—accessibility is not an issue. The densely populated area guarantees plenty of customer traffic and ensures a steady stream of income.

Its grandiose 5500 square foot interior is done up in light cherry and filled with hand-picked icons and symbols of Chinese art. There’s a miniature reproduction of a Chinese garden filled with flora and rock formations that brings good luck right behind a glass screen inside the restaurant. A rainbow lighting effect created by pink, blue, and purple florescent strips attached to the ceiling gives the restaurant a surreal touch. The dining room is also filled with wooden dado and elegant souvenirs with accents of classical Chinese elements such as paintings and jade items. These interior elements all come together to give the restaurant a modern yet traditional and elegant style.

Ways to Wake Your Taste buds

The buffet concept opens a window to the world of Chinese delights. Unlimited food is something unique about a buffet restaurant that can certainly satisfy hungry diners. At China Star, you will find that everything served here goes above and beyond ordinary buffets in terms of quality. The portions allocated in each tray at the buffet bars are tightly controlled with a measurement system that indicates exactly when a dish sinks past a threshold. That is when it is replenished with a freshly made batch.

The buffet bars feature a smorgasbord of delicious buffet items that are changed frequently, meaning more choices for the restaurant’s loyal customers. Taking their time to pick what they want to eat, customers can choose from salad, Black Pepper or Broccoli Chicken, and General Tso's Chicken. Additionally, customers can find plenty of fresh seafood and sushi at the buffet bars. “Our ingenious chefs come up with delicious combinations that will surely appeal to even the pickiest eaters,” says the owner, Bryce Chen. Although every buffet item is quite popular, if he had to name a few standouts, they would be Bourbon Chicken, Rib Eye Steak and Korean Chicken.

Korean Chicken is one of the original house dishes that Bryce Chen takes pride in. Korean Chicken is prepared using only the best quality chicken. After being marinated in a blend of savory sauce in advance, the chicken is then grilled in the oven until it is extra crispy and chewy. Lastly, the homemade sweet and sour sauce is served over the chicken, giving it a rich flavor.

Mr. Chen is very concerned about the health of his customers and the rising rates of obesity, diabetes and other heart ailments caused by improper eating habits amongst the populace. A variety of vegetables are offered on a daily basis at China Star because he believes that eating lots of vegetables is required in order to have good health. All of the chefs are knowledgeable about how to prepare food in a healthy manner— they use little salt and oil when preparing dishes.

Food quality is the most important factor when it comes to operating a buffet restaurant. Chen guarantees that the ingredients his kitchen staff uses are of the highest quality. Food purchases are made four times a week and everything is carefully scrutinized—the ingredients used are always fresh.

Top-notch Service

Each staff member at China Star is customer-oriented and considerate. “I require each member of the wait staff to always be patient and attend to every customer’s needs even during peak hours when everyone is busy.” They wear genuine smiles on their faces and happily greet each guest at the door. Following the philosophy “Customers Are Never Wrong,” if there’s a dispute or a complaint, the staff members always apologize and try their best to satisfy the guests. Meetings are held occasionally for the purpose of discussing problems and identifying ways to make improvements.

It’s difficult for customers to forget the friendly atmosphere that Mr. Chen and his staff have created. Referring to the relationship between the restaurant and the customers, Mr. Chen says that he has strong confidence that customers will return over and over, not only for the hearty food that the restaurant offers, but also for the service. There are a lot of Chinese eateries located in the surrounding area, meaning there are a lot of choices for those who love eating Chinese food. And so competition is fierce. “We are lucky that customers are willing to dine here. Most of them never tire of our food and come back again and again,” Chen says.

Satisfaction cannot be achieved unless the customer is happy with every aspect of their visit. Other than food and service, Mr. Chen runs a tight ship regarding sanitation and cleanliness. The spotless environment is welcoming. Restrooms, the litmus test of how a restaurant values hygiene, are spanking clean. The dining areas, including the buffet bar are immaculate.

The restaurant was recognized as being “The Best Chinese Restaurant in Sand Springs” in 1998. But even now 12 years later, it is still winning over new fans far and wide. Bryce Chen would like to take this opportunity to thank his loyal guests for all their support over the years.

Always Outstanding

When Bryce Chen arrived in Pennsylvania in 1992, he first got work as a busboy and then gradually worked his way up to become chief chef. He held this position at several Chinese restaurants, gaining a lot of experience in the process. Making the American Dream come true was not easy for this young man—he was new to the country and did not have a firm grasp of English at that time. The first job taught him to be courageous and by keeping his nose to the grindstone he found that the difficult tasks before him were just steps on a ladder that would lead him towards a better life.

In 1996, four years after first stepping on American soil, Bryce Chen got his first chance to run a business—China Star Chinese Buffet. It’s been fifteen years since he took over China Star and things have never been better. While some restaurant owners like to keep things the same, Chen never stops innovating. He hopes to make improvements to how the restaurant is managed in order to increase efficiency and further enhance each customer’s experience. In the future, as soon as the economy recovers, he plans to diversify the menu at China Star further. He’s confident the restaurant will continue to prosper long into the future.
