If one Superior City Councilor has his way, Happy Meals won't be so happy anymore.
Superior City Councilor Greg Mertzig wants the city to follow in the foot steps of San Francisco and put an outright ban on toys included in fast food meals that don't meet certain requirements
The ordinance which is set for a preliminary vote next Tuesday says toys will not be included with meals unless the caloric intake is below 600, fat content not to exceed ten percent, sodium levels less than 500 milligrams and zero trans fat.
The meals also must meet F–D–A recommended amounts of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Councilor Mertzig says he crafted the resolution after several of his constituents have asked him to make some effort in improving the health of Superior citizens.
He says the preliminary ordinance is a first step in a larger process.
"In fact the ordinance in its entirety hasn't actually been drafted yet, that will be a work in progress, and that'll take place with the city attorney and it may even require a committee process as well."
When asked about enforcing the ordinance Councilor Mertzig said it would be like all other ordinances, and possible violations would result in monetary fines, although that still has to be worked out with the city attorney.
A spokesperson for McDonalds said it would be inappropriate for them to comment on rumor or speculation as they have not been made aware of the proposed ordinance.
