We know how important a good breakfast can be for our kids. But with school time here, dietitians say there are a handful of foods you might want to add to your grocery list to help your student power their minds through busiest of days.
Registered dietitian Batina Timmons shows her top brain food picks. She says yogurt is a great snack.
"I really like the Greek yogurt. It's fairly new on the market. It's a little more creamy than regular yogurt, and it has two to three more times more protein," she explained.
But you'll need to mix it with the first food on the list: blueberries. That combination is a true brain builder, because it is a balance of protein and a complex carbs.
"If you have a balanced food, you will have a balanced brain, and that makes a brain more powerful," Timmons said.
Other brain foods: avocado, oatmeal, and beans or legumes, like hummus. Organic peanut butter is on the list, as well as tomatoes, green leafy veggies and Omega 3 rich fish.
"DHA has been shown to be brain food, it's primarily in salmon and tuna, but it's hard to get kids to eat fish," Timmons said. "but there are a lot of fortified foods."
A good substitute for fish is DHA fortified foods, like eggs or flax seed -- ground or whole.
In the end, the key is to create in kids a love of healthy snacks.
